Civil engineering - surveying, which is sometimes called geodetic and geomatic engineering today, includes all activities that somehow lead to estimating the coordinates of one or more points on the surface, inside or outside the earth. In addition, since in the past all of these activities led to the preparation of a map of an area of the earth, it has become known as the field of civil engineering - surveying, and because any type of civil activity and construction has required the use of a map in the first step, this field has been considered one of the trends of civil engineering. However, today, with the expansion of the scope of activities of engineers in this field, we are witnessing their presence in other scientific, research and industrial applications, including controlling dams, high towers, guiding aircraft, earthquake prediction, archaeology, manufacturing industrial components, etc. For this reason, perhaps the name geodetic and geomatic engineering can be considered a more appropriate name for this field.
